Please Ask Your Student! Students have been given this handout with an example of a diagram. Thanks! Research Writing Guide – 2020 Name__________________________ Hour___ Use your paraphrased Note-card Packet and additional notes to write your research. Required: You must have your note-cards in front of you to type a second draft. If you forgot to bring the note-card packet, you do not have permission to use the computers today. Go back and do more research on a fresh note-card packet, or work on your “Cool Facts” list, or your drawing. *Your drawing will become a diagram, with lines pointing to various body parts. 1. MOST IMPORTANT: You should be adding your own thoughts, connections, and ideas, because this is truly the part that is your own writing. (Otherwise you’ve just paraphrased!) 2. Avoid phrases that are opinion based. 3. Keep your language “science-like” because we are writing non-fiction. 4. Use in-text citations, for example: This lizard is ovoviviparous, which means it’s eggs “...are hatched within the body of the parent” (Encyclopedia Britannica, p.1). Or, you could use a sentence starter such as: According to Encyclopedia Britannica, lizards are ovoviviparous... 5. One quoted piece of information is required, and must have an in-text citation. However, use quotes sparingly. (A whole paper that is quoted is not really your writing, is it? :) 6. Define words in the writing; especially words you had to look up. 7. Use 12 point Font size. Use Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman Fonts only. 8. Your paper’s format will LOOK LIKE the non-fiction animal websites we’ve been using. 9. Works Cited Page: We already created an “Add On” in Google Classroom to link us to Easybib.com. However, Easybib can be tricky to use sometimes. You may also try Scribbr.com. 10. When creating a Works Cited Page, it ALWAYS belongs on its OWN solo page. Title the page Works Cited, use one of the online tools, open two windows so you can copy and paste the URL into it. Be sure Scribbr.com or Easybib.com are set to MLA. Then select “Book” or “Website” or whatever source you are citing. When citing a book, you can type in the ISBN number. 11. We will be importing our completed paper into Glogster (a self-contained webpage) on a date TBD. 12. Additional Requirements for Glogster: a. A link to a very short nature video, 3 minutes or less, about your animal. b. A map of a place in the world where your animal lives. c. Know what the habitat looks like, because we will need to import a background picture. d. Make a hand-drawn picture of your animal, to turn into a diagram. See Back>> e. Make a list of “Cool Facts” about your animal. Remember to CITE YOUR SOURCE. Drawing & Diagram Guide 1. Draw a picture of your animal. Keep it simple. If possible, make it your original work. 2. You can use a website, book, or magazine to help you with your drawing. Some students use a piece of plain paper to trace an outline. Be sure to cite your source. 3. COLOR it! J We will photograph it and import it into Glogster later. 4. Draw lines or arrows to the major body parts with a brief description of each. 5. Title it with the animal’s name. 6. Find the Scientific Name of the animal and include it. The first name is capitalized, the second name is not capitalized. Put it into italics. See below. 7. Tell where in the world it is commonly found. *See the example handout! *This example is not colored. Your drawing must have color. Please Include the following somewhere in your drawing. This is an example. What animal are YOU studying? Blue-tongued Skink Scientific Name: Tiliqua scincoides Found in North-east, East coast, and South-eastern Australia Source: EnchantedLearning.com/Animal Printouts Special Note: Would you like some extra practice with grammar?
